Top travel SIMs and eSIMs compared

About Top travel SIMs and eSIMs compared

Choosing a travel eSIM comes down to a short list: how many countries a plan covers, what the data costs per GB, and how long a plan stays valid once you land. Those pulls point in different directions. A wide plan spreads its cost across many destinations but can carry a fair-use cap or slower speeds. A local plan is generous and cheap, and it only works within a single country. A long stay pushes you towards a bigger allowance, while a short week away can be covered by a small daily bundle. This ranking covers 868 travel SIM and eSIM brands, from global marketplaces that resell coverage in many countries to carrier plans sold by the networks themselves. Each brand is scored on what a traveller feels day to day: breadth of coverage, the price per GB, validity, whether activation is instant, and how the seller is set up. Unlimited plans are common in this category, so the fair-use wording matters as much as the headline. The trade-off is consistent throughout. Pay more for breadth, or pay less and stay put.

How we picked

Each brand is scored on weighted components drawn from published plan data. Cost carries a weight of 40%, taken from the entry price and the price per GB. The offer weight is 40%, covering coverage, features such as unlimited data, 5G, hotspot sharing and instant activation, plan validity, region and audience fit. Trust accounts for 20%, reflecting the seller type, the named legal entity and the support channels listed. Scores convert into ranks, and the label beside each brand is the one the ranking assigns. Data comes from each provider's own pages: pricing pages, destination pages, help centres, terms and conditions, and imprint or legal notices. Figures are set against the range across the whole category, so a price that looks low on its own is judged against the market as a whole rather than in isolation. Partners are listed first, in the order their scores place them, and the rest follow on the same basis. The top position is a commercial label, not a judgement about quality in general, so read each blurb against the criteria that matter for your own trip.

What to look for

Coverage that matches your route

A wide footprint costs more but removes the need to swap plans at each border. The median brand in this ranking covers 76 countries, with the lower quartile at 15.5 and the upper quartile at 160. A single-country plan is the cheaper choice when the trip never leaves one destination.

Price per GB, not just the entry price

The entry price flatters plans that stop quickly or cap the allowance. The median price per GB in this category is €1.50, with a low of €0 and a high of €131.54. Set that against the allowance you would realistically use.

Validity that matches the trip length

Check the validity window against the days you will be away. Daily rates in this category sit at €5.99 and reach €139.44, so a long stay in a costly region can cost more than a single broad plan bought once.

Unlimited data and the fair-use wording

Most brands in this category offer unlimited data, and the rules attached to it differ. Unlimited options carry a weight of 57.6% in scoring. Read the stated policy on speed reduction, and treat speed-restricted unlimited plans differently from genuinely unthrottled ones.

Activation and setup

Instant activation removes the risk of landing with no connection, and it carries a weight of 50% in scoring. Plans that must be activated on arrival add friction, so check whether installation needs an app, a QR code or a manual profile entry.

Who stands behind the plan

Marketplaces resell other networks, carrier plans come straight from the network, and MVNOs run on host infrastructure. A named legal entity and a documented support route tell you where a problem will land. Carriers score highest on seller type here, at 64.3%.
