Our verdict
eSIM Japan suits short-trip travellers who want a single plan for Japan and the wider region without juggling separate purchases. Plans start at AUD 5.90 and run on Docomo (via Ichiban Mobile), with 5G, hotspot sharing and instant activation built in rather than added on later.

Pros and cons
Pros
- Runs on Docomo (via Ichiban Mobile) with 5G, hotspot sharing and instant activation.
- Covers from 200 countries, well above the site median of 74.
- Unlimited data plans come with a fair use policy: a daily slice of unthrottled 5G data, then unlimited data at reduced speed, resetting each period.
- Top-ups are available for trips that outlast a plan.
Cons
- Support runs on help centre only, so answers arrive as written replies rather than a call.
- A marketplace seller based in Australia, so your contract sits with a reseller rather than the network.
- Beyond the entry plan of AUD 5.90, monthly regional plans cost more: Japan is AUD 19.90 and Europe AUD 18.90.
Who it suits
- Travellers crossing several nearby countries who want one activation rather than a plan per border.
- Anyone on a short regional break who wants data working the moment the plane lands.
- Hotspot users and 5G phones, both supported here.
Who should look elsewhere
- eSIMGo.is, whose plans start at $0.99, if a bare entry plan for a single destination suits you better.
- SimToIsrael, a specialist for Israel starting at $25, if that country is all you need.
- Zwitchy, whose coverage also reaches 200 countries, so coverage alone is not the reason to pick here.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an eSIM Japan plan cost?+
Plans start at AUD 5.90, and the Japan plan runs AUD 19.90 for a month. The United States plan is AUD 20.90 and the Europe plan is AUD 18.90. Prices are listed in Australian dollars, against a site median of €5.
What does the price per GB work out at?+
The headline rate starts at $1.89, against a site median of €1.50. It ranks 62 of 115 brands on that measure, mid-table rather than cheapest.
Does the plan really give unlimited data?+
Unlimited data is one of the plan features, unlimited data, 5g and hotspot, and a fair use policy sits next to it. You get a daily allowance of unthrottled 5G data, then unlimited data at a reduced speed, and the allowance resets each period. Read it as generous rather than unrestricted full speed.
Which network do the plans run on, and is 5G included?+
Plans run on Docomo (via Ichiban Mobile), and 5G is supported. Coverage spans from 200 countries, well above the site median of 74, and the mix of plans is regional and global, regional and global. One plan can stretch across a multi-country trip.
How quickly does the eSIM start working?+
Activation is instant, one of the listed features, unlimited data, 5g and hotspot, so there is no waiting period before you are online. Hotspot sharing is supported, which matters if you share the connection with a laptop or a companion. Top-ups are available when a trip outlasts the plan.
How do I get help if the connection fails?+
Support runs on help centre only, so answers come as written replies rather than a call or a live chat. Budget for a slower exchange when a line drops mid-trip. The seller is a marketplace operating from AU, which matters for who handles a refund.
Is this aimed at short breaks or long stays?+
The plans are pitched at short trips and long trips alike, short trip and long trip. A short regional run needs little data, while a longer stay can lean on unlimited data with the fair use policy, or on top-ups when a plan runs out.
Is the brand a network or a reseller?+
It is a marketplace, with plans sold from AU by Australia Simcard Distributions Pty Ltd (ABN 35 620 794 096). Your contract is therefore with the seller rather than the network, and the Docomo connection, Docomo (via Ichiban Mobile), is what carries your traffic.
