Our verdict

Ethio Telecom suits anyone landing in Ethiopia who wants unlimited data on a local carrier network from $5. Coverage is the trade-off: 1 country, so it works for a trip there rather than a wider regional itinerary.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Unlimited data with no fair use policy applied to the unlimited package
  • Runs on the Ethio telecom network, the local carrier, so signal is on home ground
  • Top-ups are available, so a long stay can be topped up rather than repurchased
  • Support runs across email, phone, a help centre and chat

Cons

  • Coverage is 1 country, so it cannot cover a multi-country trip
  • Prices sit at $5 against a site median of €5
  • It is a local carrier plan, so it only makes sense inside Ethiopia

Who it suits

  • Travellers spending a whole trip in Ethiopia and wanting unlimited data
  • Short trips and long stays that a single top-up can cover
  • People who want carrier support rather than a marketplace seller

Who should look elsewhere

  • Multi-country travellers, who should look at Zwitchy with 200 countries covered
  • Price-first buyers, who may find the entry point at eSIMGo.is of $0.99 lower
  • Travellers heading somewhere other than Ethiopia

Where it sits among rivals

On countries covered, Ethio Telecom ranks 257 of 303 brands, which reflects a plan built for one destination rather than a trip. Price from is more competitive, at 125 of 313 brands, with the entry price of $5 close to the site median of €5. Local plans like this sit well below global eSIM coverage on reach.

Who runs it

Ethio Telecom is a carrier based in Ethiopia and founded in 2010, which means the plan is sold by the network operator rather than a reseller. Frequently asked questions

How much does Ethio Telecom cost?+

Plans start at $5. That sits near the site median starting price of €5, with the wider range running from €0.07 to €87.70. The price is for a carrier plan rather than a marketplace eSIM.

Is the data really unlimited?+

Unlimited data is included, and no fair use policy applies to the unlimited package. Usage above the package falls under the existing tariffs. So heavy use does not hit a fair use cap on the unlimited plan.

Which country does this plan cover?+

Coverage is 1 country, on the Ethio telecom network inside Ethiopia. It is a local carrier plan, so it is meant for use in Ethiopia rather than across a region.

Can I top up if I stay longer?+

Yes, top-ups are available, which suits a long trip that outlasts the first purchase. The plan is aimed at both short trips and long trips, so an extension does not mean starting over.

Does Ethio Telecom run 5G?+

Yes, 5G is included alongside the unlimited data package. The plan also runs on the carrier's own Ethio telecom network.

How do I get help?+

Support is available across email, phone and help centre. Because Ethio Telecom is the carrier itself, founded in 2010 and based in Ethiopia, the help centre, chat, email and phone all sit with the operator.

Is this an eSIM or a carrier plan?+

It is sold by a carrier, not a marketplace or reseller, and it is built as a carrier plan. Travellers who want a marketplace eSIM bought remotely may prefer a seller such as Zwitchy instead.
